10 Amazing Solar System Facts Every Child Should Know
Published: January 2025 | 6 min read
Our solar system is full of incredible wonders that can spark any child's imagination. From giant storms on Jupiter to diamond rain on Neptune, here are ten amazing facts that will make young astronomers say "Wow!"
1. The Sun Contains 99.86% of Our Solar System's Mass
The Sun is so massive that it makes up almost all of our solar system's total mass. If you put all the planets, moons, asteroids, and comets together, they would still be just a tiny fraction of the Sun's mass. The Sun is about 1.3 million times the size of Earth!
2. A Day on Venus is Longer Than Its Year
Venus rotates so slowly that it takes 243 Earth days to complete one spin (a Venusian day), but only 225 Earth days to orbit the Sun (a Venusian year). This means a day on Venus is actually longer than its year!
3. Jupiter's Great Red Spot is a Giant Storm
Jupiter has a storm that has been raging for at least 400 years! The Great Red Spot is so big that Earth could fit inside it. Wind speeds in this enormous hurricane reach up to 400 miles per hour.
4. Saturn Would Float in Water
Saturn is the least dense planet in our solar system. If you could find a bathtub big enough, Saturn would actually float! Despite being the second-largest planet, it's made mostly of hydrogen and helium gas.
5. One Million Earths Could Fit Inside the Sun
The Sun is truly enormous. Scientists estimate that about 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it. Yet the Sun is considered only a medium-sized star compared to some of the giants in our galaxy!
6. Mars Has the Largest Volcano in the Solar System
Olympus Mons on Mars is nearly three times the height of Mount Everest and about the same size as the entire country of France. It's so tall that its peak pokes above most of Mars's atmosphere!
7. Neptune Has Supersonic Winds
Neptune has the fastest winds in the solar system, reaching speeds of over 1,200 miles per hour - that's faster than the speed of sound! Scientists believe it may even rain diamonds on Neptune due to extreme pressure.
8. There Are More Stars Than Grains of Sand on Earth
Scientists estimate there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all of Earth's beaches. Our galaxy alone, the Milky Way, contains between 100 and 400 billion stars!
9. The Moon is Moving Away from Earth
Every year, the Moon moves about 3.8 centimetres further away from Earth. This is about the same rate that fingernails grow. In billions of years, the Moon will appear much smaller in our sky.
10. Footprints on the Moon Will Last Millions of Years
Because the Moon has no atmosphere, there's no wind or weather to disturb the surface. The footprints left by Apollo astronauts will remain virtually unchanged for millions of years!
